Why We Build Septic Systems In Reverse: The Septic Lesson We Discovere…

I need to share with you something nearly all septic companies will not: there are two kinds of people in this reality. Those who think septic systems are merely "underground boxes for waste," and those who have had raw sewage bubbling into their yard at midnight. I learned this distinction the hard way in 2005—waist-deep in muck, trembling in a Washington deluge, as my family and I helped a weathered installer restore our family's broken system. I was 14. My hands were raw. My jeans were destroyed. But that moment, something changed: This is not just dirt work. It's families' lives we are safeguarding.

Most companies begin by pumping tanks. We started by building them—from scratch. Back in the beginning of the 2000s, when regular kids were playing Xbox, Art Nikolin (our lead guy) and his brothers were carving out trenches under the experienced eye of a septic expert their dad hired. Hour by hour, that installer noticed something in us. Perhaps it was our fierce refusal to give up when a PVC pipe failed at 9 PM. Or how we'd argue about soil absorption rates like kids argue about pizza toppings. By 2008, we weren't just helpers—we were certified installers. But this is the secret: we learned this business from the ground up.

Understand, 90% of septic businesses launch with pumping. They know how to clean a tank but can't tell you why the drain field collapsed three years after setup. We got our hands dirty from the bottom up. No joke. I recall this one brutal summer—2006, I recall—when we put in 17 systems across Snohomish County. One homeowner's yard had soil like bedrock. The "pro" crew before us quit. But our teacher taught us a technique: hydrate the ground overnight, dig at first light. We wrapped up by noon. That system? Still operating without issue 18 years later.

Skip ahead to 2023. We get a frantic call from a desperate homeowner in Woodinville. Their brand-new septic system—put in by a "discount" crew—went belly-up during Thanksgiving dinner. Raw sewage seeped into their garden. The company abandoned them. We got there at 10 PM. Art took one peek at the tank placement and shook his head. "They put it uphill the house? Gravity does not work that way, friends." By sunrise, we'd redesigned the entire layout. Protected them $20K in landscaping damage too.

This is what sets Septic Solutions LLC apart: we build systems like we're the ones gonna depend on them. Because actually, we did. That first tank we put in as teens? Our family used it for a ten years. Every pipe we placed, web page every tank we set, had personal stakes. When you've actually eaten dinner 10 feet above a septic field you installed, you never cut corners.

Let's get straight with you—septic work ain't glamorous. But there is an skill to it. In 2015, we took on a disaster job near Lake Stevens. Rocky terrain. Tight budget. Three other companies insisted it couldn't be done without explosives. We put in a week hand-digging around rocks, repositioning the drain field millimeter by millimeter. The client teared up when we finished. Not because it was cheap—but because we'd saved her ancient oak tree.

Our advantage? We aren't not just installers. We've become storytellers of soil. We recognize which brands of PVC break in Washington's freeze-thaw cycles (skip the blue-striped material). We memorized which counties have clay that'll choke a drain field in 5 years. Shoot, we even reworked our tank baffles in 2019 after seeing how grease buildup cripples pumps. Small tweak. Major impact. Maintenance teams love us for it.

You need stats? Fine. Since 2010, 92% of our systems have survived 10+ years without major issues. But numbers won't stink when things go bad. Ask Mrs. Henderson from Monroe. Her previous installer used inferior aggregate that transformed her leach line into a concrete tomb. We used New Year's Day 2021 breaking it out. She mailed us cookies for a year.

This is the ugly truth: the majority of septic failures happen because someone skipped a step. Didn't test the soil correctly. Used inferior tanks. Got wrong the water table. We've fixed hundreds of these disasters. And each and every time, we file away another lesson. Like in 2022, when we started adding twin risers to each installation. Why? Because Randy, our lead tech, got frustrated of watching homeowners ruin their lawns during inspections. Now maintenance is a quick job.

I won't lie—this work wears on you. Art's got a photo from our first commercial job in 2009. We appear like youngsters playing in Tonka trucks. Today, we've wrinkles from studying at soil reports and laugh lines from clients who turned into friends. Like the retired couple in Bothell who require we stay for lemonade after every service calls. Or the brewery in Everett whose tank we improved last fall—they named a beer "Septic Solutions Sour." (It is... an unique taste.)

So yes, we're not the cheapest. Or the showiest. But when a storm kills power and your tank's flooding? You will not care about deals. You'll want the guys who have been there, done that, and still smell like faint regret. The team that picks up at 2 AM because we've all been that homeowner stuck ankle-deep in crisis.

In retrospect, it's funny. That installer who taught us as kids? He retired years ago. But his words still resonate in our heads each time we disturb ground. "Dig deeper," he would say. "Future you will thank past you." As it happens, he was not just talking about septic tanks.
